Good food tastes better when nobody is watching the clock.
Struisbaai isn't a destination built around white-tablecloth dining and complicated reservations.
That is part of its charm.
Eating here tends to follow the day.
A coffee after walking the harbour.
Something fresh when the boats have been in.
Lunch that quietly stretches into the afternoon.
Dinner after a day spent outside when nobody particularly wants to dress up.
For us, that is exactly how coastal food should feel.
Start close to the harbour
The harbour is still connected to Struisbaai’s fishing tradition, and fishermen continue to bring their catch ashore here. When the timing works, buying or eating fresh fish close to where it arrived is one of the simplest pleasures of staying in the village.
Don't overcomplicate it.
Fresh fish. Something cold. Sea air.
Done.
Choose the table that makes you want to stay
Our favourite places aren't necessarily the ones with the longest menus.
We look for atmosphere.
A table outside.
A view of the harbour.
Someone who remembers what is good today.
A place where ordering another coffee feels more sensible than leaving.
Struisbaai is wonderfully informal in this respect. You can move between beach, harbour and lunch without feeling as though you've changed destinations.
Eat with the seasons
A coastal town changes throughout the year.
Summer means long light and outdoor tables.
Winter means quieter restaurants, weather moving across the ocean and the appeal of somewhere warm after a windswept walk.
Rather than arriving with one fixed list of things you must eat, ask what is particularly good now.
Local knowledge usually beats an algorithm.
And leave room for the unplanned stop
One of the pleasures of the wider Overberg is that your food day doesn't necessarily have to end in Struisbaai.
A drive inland brings farm stalls, wine estates and small towns into the picture.
Which means a morning planned around coffee can very easily turn into lunch somewhere you've never heard of.
Those are often the meals we remember.
A note from Cliff Haven
This Journal will remain deliberately opinionated.
We aren't trying to build the longest restaurant directory in Struisbaai.
We'll keep adding the places we would genuinely send a Cliff Haven guest to — and we'll update the guide as the local food scene changes.
Because the point isn't to eat everywhere.
It's to find somewhere worth lingering.
