Wine country looks a little different down here.
If your idea of the Cape Winelands is grand avenues, manicured estates and mountains surrounding Stellenbosch, the vineyards around Cape Agulhas may come as a surprise.
This is a quieter landscape.
Open farmland.
Fynbos.
Wind.
Big skies.
And vines growing remarkably close to Africa’s southern edge.
The wines produced here are shaped by the cool maritime influence of the Agulhas region, with producers particularly known for expressive cool-climate varieties and a strong sense of place. Local estates explicitly describe their vineyards and wines in terms of the cool coastal conditions and distinctive soils of the Agulhas Plain.
This is not a wine route to rush
That suits Cliff Haven rather well.
Instead of trying to visit five tasting rooms before closing time, choose one or two.
Drive slowly.
Look at the landscape between them.
Have the tasting.
Order the platter.
Stay longer than planned.
The farms themselves are part of the experience.
Some tasting spaces occupy old farm buildings; others open onto wide agricultural landscapes and gardens. The point is not simply to taste wine — it's to understand why wine grown this close to the Southern Tip tastes different.
Sauvignon Blanc deserves your attention
The cool conditions around Agulhas have made Sauvignon Blanc particularly interesting here, but don't assume that means every bottle tastes the same.
Producers work with different soils, exposures and winemaking styles, creating wines that can range from bright and mineral to textured and much more serious.
Semillon also has an important place in the region, alongside reds and blends that show just how much more diverse the area is becoming.
Our advice is simple:
Don't arrive convinced you know what you like.
Taste.
Make lunch part of it
A tasting becomes substantially more enjoyable when nobody has somewhere else to be.
Many of the region's tasting experiences pair wine with local cheeses, breads, charcuterie or seasonal produce, making it very easy to turn a stop into most of an afternoon.
Designate a driver.
Book ahead where required.
And allow enough time for the journey home to be part of the day.
Then return to the coast
Perhaps this is what we like most about wine tasting from Cliff Haven.
You can spend the afternoon among vineyards and farmland and still finish the day back beside the ocean.
Open the bottle you bought.
Make something uncomplicated for dinner.
And watch the Southern Tip settle into evening.
That feels like a very good use of a day.
